Winterport: Town council approves fuel fund

Wenesday, January 23, 2008 - Bangor Daily News

WINTERPORT, Maine — The Town Council has established a fuel assistance fund to help residents in need.

Town Manager Philip Pitula said the fund was started when a resident left off a donation at the town office to be used to help people with their heating needs during this winter of frigid temperatures and soaring fuel prices. He said the man wanted to remain anonymous.

"He’s new to Winterport and he just wanted to help people and left a cash donation," Pitula said Tuesday.

In response, the Town Council voted unanimously to match up to $1,000 of donated money to assist the needy. Pitula said a number of people have inquired about assistance and the town always tries to provide support.

"General Assistance is great but a lot of things slip through the cracks. We do put some money aside for heating assistance but people have to come in and fill out some paperwork," he said. "This is a great opportunity to help out in situations where people are in need but don’t meet state income guidelines."

Those wishing to apply for assistance must come to the town office and fill out the required paperwork in person.

Anyone wishing to donate should contact Pitula at the town office at 223-5055 or send in a check payable to the town of Winterport, P.O. Box 559, Winterport 04496 and include in the memo line "Fuel Fund."
